Roberts05 ~ Grand Approach to the Temple of Philae ~ Hand colored lithograph ~ Roberts again uses human forms and elegant shadowing to provide a strong sense of depth in this illustration. The French savants also used the same techniques, but were much more detailed in their documentation of Ptolemy XII, the father of Cleopatra the Great, seen as the massive figure on the pylon pictured vanquishing his enemies. The French illustration from Description de L'Egypte can be seen in Volume 1 Plate 24.
