Gillray104 ~ 'A Phantasmagoria' ~ Originally published by James Gillray, London, January 5, 1803. This late 'Bohn' edition circa 1851. ~ Hand colored Etching ~ Gillray satirizes British Prime Minister Addington (left), Charles James Fox (right background), and Lord Hawkesbury, the British Foreign Secretary in the guise of Macbeth's three witches as they boil the British lion in a pot fueled by treaty paper, and the skeleton of Britiannia rises. On March 27, 1802, the Treaty of Amiens was signed by Britain, France, Spain, and the Batavian Republic (Holland). Gillray believed this was a disastrous peace agreement.
