A lithograph with hand colored wash, including the distinctive green border formerly associated with Samuel Mitchell atlases. Size: Approximately 14.2 inches x 11.4 inches (36 cm x 29 cm) Map Type: Atlas Rust stain in border above Lake Erie, otherwise an excellent example. Thomas, Cowperthwait & Company of Philadelphia purchased the copyright of the New Universal Atlas from Samuel Augustus Mitchell, Sr. in 1850. Taken from this atlas, this map is attractive and legible, and displays a growing network of rail roads, roads, and canals. he map also displays the topographical features of the state, including mountains, lakes and rivers. Ferry locations are also noted. Inset diagrams "Profile of the Pennsylvania Canal", "Columbia Rail Road". Inset Steam Boat Route table.
