An engraved map, with original outline color Size: 21 inches X 27 inches Map Type: Atlas This is a supurb copy with strong engraving. The detailed notes on this 1826 map identify its sources. Brué names the continent “New Holland,” the name first given to it in 1644 by the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. Only in the 19th century did the name Australia come into general use. This map was taken from Adrien Hubert Brue's Atlas Universel. Adrien Brué (1786-1832) accompanied the French explorer Nicolas Baudin on one of his last voyages, a mission to map the western coast of the continent. Inset map of Australia divided into 9 regions.
