An engraved map with original full color wash. Size: 38-1/2 inches X 27-1/2 inches Map Type: Atlas This is an excellent copy with original full color wash. This large and decorative oversized map of Africa was printed from two plates and shows Africa with islands in the Atlantic Ocean and the neighboring Indian Ocean with the island of Madagascar. Africa is shown divided into its various kingdoms and displaying their names and locations of native tribes. Topographical information such as deserts, mountains, woods, lakes, and gold mines is shown.
A highly decorative title cartouche with symbols of the African continent is shown including an elephant, a lion, a native with gold and ivory. The lower right cartouche contains a new dedication to Sir Isaac Newton.
John Senex, bookseller, engraver, publisher and geographer was a contemporary and rival of Hermann Moll. With a smaller output he had a sounder geographical judgment and was one of the leading English geographers of the late 18th century. John Senex was elected 1728 a Fellow of the Royal Society, he died in 1740.
