A folding lithographed map, with hand colored outlines. Size: 20 inches x 25.25 inches; Scale: 1 inch = approximately 75 miles. Map Type: Pocket This map is in excellent condition except for burns along the fold lines. Includes Phelps's Travellers' Guide Through the United States; Containing upwards of Seven Hundred Rail-Road, Canal, and Stage and Steam-Boat Routes Accompanied with a New Map of the United States. 12mo, 70 pp, The guide is complete. It shows travelling routes between points in each state as well as distances between points on major rivers. The map was drawn and engraved by J. M. Atwood in New York. The maps ornate border has portraits of famous persons in American history as well as former presidents, state and national seals. Inset map of Oregon, California and the new State of Texas. The map delineates all the states east of the Mississippi River as well as Louisiana, Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, and portions further west. State Capitals, Rail roads, Canals, and Roads are displayed as well as distances between points along the roads. Overall, this is one of the most beautiful pocket maps available in the mid 1800's and a gem in any collection.
