A lithograph with hand colored wash. Size: 13-1/8 inches X 16-1/8 inches; Scale: 1 inch = approximately 40 miles. Map Type: Atlas This is a good copy with vivid colors. General age toning throughout. Some offsetting. Dark spot in the center of the image on the Crow River A very interesting map of early Minnesota. Identifies the location of Lewis & Clark's Ft. Mandan on the Missouri river along with other forts further to the south. Many other landmarks and important locations are identified. Thomas, Cowperthwait & Company of Philadelphia purchased the copyright of the New Universal Atlas from Samuel Augustus Mitchell, Sr. in 1850. Taken from an 1852 atlas, this map is attractive and legible, and displays a growing network of rail roads, roads, and canals.
