A lithographed map, with hand colored wash Size: 11.75 inches X 14.75 inches. Map Type: Atlas This is a good copy with vivid color. General age toning throughout and some offsetting. Following Mitchell's acquisition of Henry Tanner's cartography business in 1846, this map by C.S. Williams remained relatively unchanged until the publishing rights were sold to Thomas, Cowperthwait & Company in late 1850. This particular map was taken from an 1852 atlas. No changes in this map from it's original issue by Mitchell in 1847 are observed, except the inset map now reflects the borders established with the 1Compromise of 1850, and the territory has been renamed "New Mexico". This is the last issue of this Republic era style map with grant areas illustrated. Mitchell had an arrangement with J.H. Young for a "new" map of the State of Texas that Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. would release with the next issue of the Universal Atlas later in 1852.
