Tunis flourished became an important city on the Mediterranean after the Muslims gained control in the 7th century. In 1574, it was attacked and captured by the Ottoman Empire ending Spanish rule and acertaining North Africa as Muslim instead of Christian. Tunis remained in Turkish control until the French occupation in 1881. The scene shows the siege of the fortress at La Goulette.
