An engraved map with hand colored wash. Size: 14 inches X 19 inches Map Type: Atlas This is a superior copy, with vivid hand-drawn outline colors. This is a very decorative map of the important kingdoms of Fez and Morocco. The map extends into the Atlantic to include the Canary Islands and Madeira and shows the Strait of Gibraltar. It is richly engraved and embellished with three strapwork cartouches and the sea is filled with ships and a sea monster. French text on verso. In 1604 Jodocus Hondius purchased the copper plates of Gerard Mercator's atlas from Mercator's grandson and republished it a few years later with 36 additional maps. After Hondius' death in 1612, his publishing work in Amsterdam was continued by his widow and two sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, publishers of this map. Inset map of Penon de Velez a Spanish fort off the Barbary Coast.
