An engraved map with hand colored wash

Size: Double plate folio, 39 cm (15.4 inches) x 43 cm (16.9 inches); Scale: 1 inch = 11 miles.

Map Type: Atlas

This is an excellent copy, with strong engraving and vivid old color. Age darkened across it's centerline fold.

Mathew Carey, an Irish immigrant, was a pioneer in American cartography, for he established the first American specialized cartographic publishing firm in Philadelphia. He used the best artists and had numerous craftsmen for engraving, printing, and coloring his maps. He was followed by John Melish and Henry S. Tanner, two other giants in 19th century America. This map is from the first Atlas made in the United States that listed color as an option.

This map shows a very early Georgia with settlers moving into it's eastern portions, while the west remains wild and occupied by the Middle Creek, Lower Creek, and Seminole Indian tribes. The southern boundry with Florida, which was still part of Spain when this map was created, is marked "Boundry of the United States".

This is one of the earliest maps of the state of Georgia. It is the earliest available atlas map of the State of Georgia. An important and valuable record of the cartographical history of Georgia.

Taken from a very rare color wash version of Carey's General Atlas, Improved And Enlarged; Being A Collection Of Maps Of The World . . . .
