A copper plate engraved map, with hand colored wash Size: 3-1/4 inches X 4-5/8 inches Map Type: Atlas This is a superior copy, with strong engraving and hand colored outlines. Archivally framed in a 1 inch wood frame, outside dimensions 13 inches X 14 inches. This map of the Netherlands was engraved by Pieter Van Den Keere based on maps created by John Speed. Published in London circa 1676 by Thomas Basset and Richard Chiswell. Peter Van Den Keere (circa 1571 - 1646), is identified as the engraver on this map as Petrus Kaerius. To escape religious persecution, he moved to London in 1584 with his sister who married the now famous cartographer, Jodocus Hondius.
