1845Tanner, Henry S.PhiladelphiaMap of Texas from the most recent authorities.$4,500 Picture

A lithograph with hand colored wash.

Size: 11.75 inches X 14.75 inches

Map Type: Atlas

Inset map "Texas north of Red River". This is a superior copy, with vivid colors. Two small rust spots in the Gulf of Mexico and in San Patricio county.

This beautiful map, originally engraved by C.S. Williams, was included in the last edition of Henry S. Tanner's Universal Atlas published by Carey and Hart, replacing the aging 1838 Texas map by T.G. Bradford that the publication originally contained until 1845. The new map carries the distinctive Tanner border unlike any others used with this map. The map states that it is copyrighted and "published" by C.S. Williams at the old H.S. Tanner address in Philadelphia, and may have been involved in a copyright or payment dispute since Tanner had likely commissioned the updated map and engraving work to replace the old Bradford, but soon would sell all his copyrights to S. Augustus Mitchell, perhaps an indication of financial difficulties while this important map was being created. Texas was now an important State, and the importance of updated information about it was paramount to the business.

This is a very rare 2nd state of this map of Texas, it includes the abolished counties of La Baca1, Neches1, Waco1, and Spring Creek1.

New and renamed counties also appear on this map, including Brazos (formerly named Navasota), Panola (formerly named Harrison), Rusk, Burleson, Menard, Trinity, and Madison counties.
