A copper plate engraved map. Size: 9 3/4 inches X 12 3/4 inches to the neat line. Map Type: Atlas This is an excellent, dark copy. Some general age darkening. Count Erik Dahlberg, a military man and engineer was born Stockholm, Sweden, and intensely studied mathematics, architecture, perspective and map drawing. He rose to the level of titled nobility due to his military abilities. In He was best known for compiling the impressive collection of drawings called Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna, or Ancient and Modern Sweden, from which this map is taken. The title of this map is translated "A true to life geometric depiction of the very famed island and the ancient royal residency of Björkö, situated in the very famous Lake Mälaren, here correctly shown as it appears today." One of the oldest cities in Sweden, Birka was an important Viking trading center which handled goods from Scandinavia as well as Central and Eastern Europe and the Orient.
