James Stuart and Nicholas Revett met in Rome in 1742 and traveled to Naples to study Greeces antiquities and monuments. They completed their initial survey for The Antiquities of Athens, from which this map is taken, between 1751 and 1754. Their accurate measurements and drawings of the ruins of Athens were published many times. John Stuart's architectural endevors utilizing Greecian influence earned him the nickname "Athenian Stuart."

This map provides the details of three of the major Greek ports and the optimal approaches to them by sea.
