A copper plate engraved map, with hand colored outlines. Size: 24 inches X 18.5 inches; Scale: 1 inch = approximately 300 miles. Map Type: Atlas This is a superior copy, extremely clean with vivid colors. Some very small cases of spotting near the original folio crease line. This spectacular map is plate 39 - America, from the 1847 edition of London Atlas of Universal Geography, Exhibiting the Physical & Political Division of the Various Countries of the World. It has hand-colored boundry outlines that are ambiguous in the disputed border with British America in the northwest corner of the continent. Texas is featured with it's 1844 Republic border and upper California is identified as part of Mexico. John Arrowsmith, a second generation cartographer from the noted Arrowsmith family, was a founder member of the Royal Geographical Society in London. This is an almost perfect example of this beautiful map.
